Users Coming Off Slimming Jabs Gain Back Pounds at a Quadrupled Rate Than Dieters

Obesity treatment often requires ongoing approaches.

Fresh analysis reveals that individuals who discontinue blockbuster GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain shed pounds at a significantly accelerated pace than those who stop traditional diet and exercise plans.

Research printed in a leading health publication points out that while overweight individuals frequently drop a large proportion of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the mass is regained at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.

"People buying these treatments must be cognizant of the potential of quick rebound weight gain when the treatment is stopped," stated lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of recovery means a return to pre-treatment weight in about 18 months.

Weighing Therapies

The research, which reviewed 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, contrasted the results of the injectable medications with older methods.

Researchers point out that people who lose weight through diet and exercise typically see a more gradual weight regain—approximately 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.

Explaining the Fast Rebound

Doctors suggest the mode of action of the jabs is key to understanding the heightened weight return.

GLP-1 drugs imitate a natural hormone called GLP-1, which moderates feelings of fullness.

"Long-term administration of GLP-1 levels far above than normal might result in the system to produce less of its own natural GLP-1, and may also reduce sensitivity to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.

"Withdrawal of this GLP-1 'fix' results in appetite is unsuppressed, making overeating much more probable."

An Ongoing Condition?

Health authorities advise the jabs for individuals with obesity-related medical conditions, accompanied by prescribed diet and exercise modifications.

Many experts argue that, due to the likelihood of weight regain, the therapy might need to be long-term.

This opinion is echoed by drug manufacturers, who say that the findings "highlight the persistent character of excess weight," comparing it to managing diseases like hypertension.

Patient Experiences

People who have come off the jabs explain a sudden resurgence of cravings.

"I experienced a switch flipping and you become ravenous," described a patient.

The struggle is worsened if users have not established permanent dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.

Growing Interest

Survey data indicate that millions of people in the UK have used these injections in the last 12 months, with interest remaining high.

  • Adoption is greater among women than men.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest usage rates.
  • Many access the drugs through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

Ultimately, researchers caution that while GLP-1 drugs are effective agents for shedding pounds, they are not a magic fix and maintained weight loss likely depends on integrated lifestyle support.
