US Military Conducts Lethal Strike in Eastern Pacific, Leading to Four Fatalities
As stated by a senior defense official, the American armed forces carried out a fatal strike on a boat in the Pacific Ocean, resulting in the deaths of four individuals.
“Joint Task Force Southern Spear carried out a lethal kinetic strike on a vessel operated by a terrorist group in international waters. Intelligence verified the vessel was traveling along a established drug smuggling route and was involved in illicit drug transport. All four male drug traffickers were killed, and no American forces were injured.”
Context and Recent Strikes
The statement comes a day after an announcement regarding a blockade of all targeted oil tankers entering and leaving Venezuela. That statement on online platforms, the US president alleged Venezuela of using oil revenues to fund drug trafficking and criminal activities, vowing to escalate the military buildup.
Just on Tuesday, US defense officials stated it had conducted strikes on three boats suspected of trafficking drugs in the Pacific, leading to the deaths of eight people. Since 2 September, over 20 military engagements have killed at least 99 people, most off the coast of Venezuela.
Administration Defends Tactics Amidst Pressure
The administration has encountered increasing pressure to release video of a 2 September vessel attack. However, officials have refused to do so. The administration has supported its campaign as a successful operation, saying it has prevented drugs from reaching US shores and has pushed back on concerns that it is stretching the limits of legal military action.
While the administration has stated the operation is about halting drugs headed to the US, remarks from a senior aide appeared to confirm a broader geopolitical aim. In a recent interview, the senior advisor said the president “wants to keep on blowing boats up until the Venezuelan president cries uncle.”
This indicates the series of strikes may be part of a push to remove Venezuela's sitting leadership.
