US Brokers Ukraine Talks in Abu Dhabi as White House Seeks for Peace Deal

Diplomatic talks involving American, Russian, and Ukrainian delegates are underway in Abu Dhabi this Tuesday, marking the most recent phase in initiatives to achieve a ceasefire deal to end the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.

Key Delegates and Initial Discussions

US Army Secretary the US representative reportedly met with a Moscow group on Monday night, with dialog extending into Tuesday.

“Negotiations are advancing smoothly with continued optimism. The Secretary remains in close coordination with the administration throughout these proceedings,” his spokesperson stated.

Ukraine’s military intelligence chief, the head of military intelligence, was also expected to participate in the proceedings, though details were vague whether face-to-face engagement with Moscow’s representatives would occur or if separate one-on-one sessions would be conducted.

Membership of the Moscow team was not immediately clear. “We cannot provide details. Our position is to monitor press coverage,” a Russian representative informed official outlets.

Context and Revised Peace Plan

The current meetings follow prior discussions in a European nation where American and Kyiv representatives revised a draft American proposal for resolving the conflict.

Russia has not yet approved the most recent iteration of the plan and is unlikely to accept many of the Ukrainian amendments.

Russia’s foreign minister, Sergei Lavrov, declared that any modified agreement must embody the “essence and wording” of what was discussed during previous summit talks between both countries.

International Responses and Apprehensions

European officials are apparently finding it difficult to remain involved in the negotiations as American representatives assume control.

The Finnish leader, Alexander Stubb, who has emerged as a key interlocutor between Washington and European leaders, commented that the coming days would be crucial in attempts to find a agreement.

He reportedly spoke with Kyiv’s leader and the alliance representatives, stating that “Ukraine’s destiny must be determined by Ukrainians, and with European security falling under Europe’s purview.”

Meanwhile, the France’s president, Emmanuel Macron, warned against a agreement that would amount to a “concession” for the nation.

“What was put on the table gives us an idea of what would be acceptable for the Russians. But does this imply it should be endorsed by Ukraine and Europe? The answer is no,” he affirmed.

Details of the Original American Proposal

The US proposal was reportedly composed of multiple articles and was drawn from dialog between American and Russian officials, with input from Ukrainian defense authorities.

Key elements of the proposal allegedly included:

  • The nation ceding areas presently held by Russia
  • Further zones that would be required to be willingly given up
  • Limits on the size of the Ukrainian army
  • Immunity for all parties in the conflict regarding violations

Recent Developments and Continuing Challenges

The US official allegedly traveled to the Ukrainian capital to brief Zelenskyy on the proposal and press rapid approval.

This pressure, coupled with the disclosure of the plan, reportedly took by surprise Ukrainian and European officials.

The Ukrainian president reportedly that the country was facing one of the hardest moments in its existence and was being compelled to choose between “losing our dignity or losing a key ally.”

Subsequently, Driscoll informed alliance ambassadors on the proposal in the capital, with one participant labeling it as “a disastrous gathering” and stating that EU ambassadors were shocked by both the content and manner of the presentation.

Washington later softened its stance, indicating that the 28-point proposal was an “starting position for talks” rather than a final demand.

Security Situation During Negotiations

While peace talks proceed, Moscow has maintained its nightly attacks on Ukrainian urban centers.

Moscow’s forces allegedly launched numerous of projectiles and many of unmanned aircraft at objectives in and around the capital, as stated by Ukrainian reports.

Zelenskyy emphasized that the Kremlin must not feel it could win the war while negotiations were ongoing.

“The priority is coordinated diplomatic movement among all partners, through shared endeavors. Pressure on Russia must deliver results,” he stated.

The capital’s leader reported that multiple people had been killed in the overnight attack on the city.
