This new direction follows significant changes at the state-funded body, including the departure of its ex-leader last month after both staff concerns and government pressure for major restructuring.

Increasing Digital Threats

The latest project comes amid growing concern about the nation's susceptibility to digital service failures and cyber-attacks.

Recent events have highlighted these vulnerabilities, including a major outage affecting global cloud computing and latest online threats that disrupted production at key facilities and logistics systems across several organizations.

Management and Supervision

A ex-military leader of the UK's air and space warfare centre will report back next month on how the government-funded institute can optimally help the scale of government AI ambitions in national security, homeland protection and information gathering.

Strategic Realignment

The organization's leader, a former Amazon UK boss, confirmed that 78 different research projects at the 440-staff institute have been terminated, transferred out or completed because they do not align with the new direction.

Organizational Difficulties

The center has faced organizational challenges since last year as workers demonstrated against restructuring, culminating in a group of employees registering an official concern to the relevant regulatory body.

The institute's leadership stated that these staff complaints were third-party reviewed by a neutral third party that found them to have be unsubstantiated.
