Two Cuba-bound Aid Ships Listed Missing after Setting Sail from the Coast of Mexico.
A large-scale search and recovery effort is currently ongoing in the Caribbean region for a pair of missing sailboats loaded with relief goods en route from the Mexican coast to Havana.
Military Rescue Operations Initiated
Mexico has sent naval teams and search planes to search for the two vessels, which were transporting a minimum of nine crew members, according to a navy statement.
The ships had been projected to reach Havana on the early part of the week, but there has been a complete lack of contact from them and zero verification of their arrival, the statement clarified.
Context of Relief to the Nation
The Caribbean nation has depended significantly on humanitarian shipments from Mexico over the last several weeks, as the country grapples with multiple power outages across the country.
"Both captains and crews are experienced sailors, and each boat are outfitted with appropriate safety systems and communication devices," a representative for the convoy said.
The nine-person crew are nationals of Poland, France, Cuba and the US. Mexico said it has been in touch with maritime rescue coordination centres from the involved countries along with their consular staff.
"We are working closely with the relevant authorities and are still optimistic in the ability of the crews to safely arrive in Havana," the official further stated.
Earlier Humanitarian Delivery
Earlier in the week, the government in Havana widely celebrated and warmly received another boat that had carried 14 tonnes of donated goods to the nation.
That ship, dubbed "a new Granma" following the name of the vessel in which Castro returned to Cuba to start the Cuban Revolution in the 1950s, delivered solar panels, medicines, baby formula, cycles and foodstuffs.
Wider International Backdrop
Non-governmental organizations and volunteers have been at the forefront of efforts to ship essential supplies to Cuba since January, coinciding with the time a energy blockade on the Communist-run nation came into effect.
Global bodies have since raised alarms about "dire" supply shortages, with in excess of 50,000 surgeries called off in Cuba due to energy rationing.
Political pressure have been ramped up in recent months, with remarks from several representatives emphasizing the delicate nature of diplomatic ties.
In response to certain statements, a senior government figure declared that "the governance model of Cuba is not subject to discussion."
Reports suggest that initial phases of talks were initiated, although their present status remains not publicly known.
The naval forces affirmed it was dedicated to using the full extent of its capabilities at its command to find the sailboats and ensure the security of the crews.
At this time, there has been no public statement on the missing boats by the Cuban leadership.
