We are checking images and video posted this morning that depict the scene of a alleged vehicle-borne explosive blast that Russian officials say killed a high-ranking military officer in Moscow.

Officials in Russia confirmed that Lieutenant General Fanil Sarvarov was inside the car that exploded and that he succumbed to his wounds. A probe is under way.

Our starting point to check the location of where the pictures were from relied on posts indicating the blast happened on Yasenevaya Street in the southern part of the capital city of Russia.

We used panoramic mapping services on digital map platforms and the Russian search engine Yandex to corroborate the distinctive yellow colour of a nearby residential complex seen in the footage.

Locating other buildings, lamp-posts and the road configuration confirmed where the footage were taken.

Additionally, we verified that the video clips were recent and that the images had not undergone manipulated.
