The city's incoming mayor, Zohran Mamdani, will opt to live in the iconic Gracie Mansion, vacating the affordable apartment that was a central issue throughout his campaign.

An Iconic Home

Dating back to 1799, Gracie Mansion has been the official residence for the majority of New York City mayors since the post-war period.

Yet, Mamdani, for whom rent control is a core policy, was not quick to announce he would live there immediately following his electoral win in November.

"My choice was based on keeping my family safe and the need to dedicating my complete efforts on implementing the affordability agenda voters supported," stated Mamdani in a statement.

A Fond Farewell

Mamdani lived in the Queens borough of Astoria, a district famous for its abundance of cultural enclaves and global cuisine.

"To my neighbors in Astoria: many thanks for demonstrating the best of New York City," he expressed.

"While I may no longer live in the neighborhood, the community will continue to reside a part of me and my efforts as mayor," he said.

Campaign Controversy

Throughout his election campaign, Mamdani linked his core platform – to freeze the rent – to his own housing situation.

Yet his opponents, most notably one-time governor Andrew Cuomo, challenged Mamdani for living in the rent-stabilized unit even though he hails from a well-known family.

A House Not Always Used

Not every mayor have opted to reside at Gracie Mansion.

Michael Bloomberg, the former mayor, preferred to remain in his own townhouse on Manhattan's Upper East Side throughout his time in office, which concluded in 2012.

Rather, Bloomberg argued it should be a space for official events, and championed significant upgrades of the older mansion.

A Stately Residence

When Mamdani moves into Gracie Mansion near his inauguration on 1 January, he will find himself in a setting far removed from his previous Astoria apartment.

Featuring cream-colored walls, green shutters, and white railings, Gracie Mansion is an ornate structure overlooking the East River.

Inside, the first floor of the classically designed mansion is decorated in the spirit of the home's early 19th-century origins.

The estate, which is said to has five bedrooms, also has enhanced security to safeguard the mayor and his family.

Ghostly Tales

A number of people have alleged that Gracie Mansion also has ghostly inhabitants.

Chirlane McCray, the spouse of ex-mayor Bill De Blasio, told reporters that doors would sometimes open and closing inexplicably, and the floorboards made strange noises.

Former Mayor Eric Adams was even more convinced. "It doesn't matter what anyone says," he declared in 2022. "There are ghosts in there, man."

A Critical Policy Issue

His former home is under rent control, meaning the city regulates on how much building managers can increase rent each year.

City residents see such units as valuable lifelines as the cost of housing rises faster than the average income.

Records showed Mamdani his rent was $2,300 each month for his apartment.

Based on data from real estate analysts Zillow, the median rent for a studio or one-bedroom in New York City is $3,500 a month.
