The Details Known Concerning the Victims of the Bondi Beach Terrorist Incident
A minimum of 16 individuals lost their lives and over 40 sustained injuries when gunmen fired on a Hanukkah event at Bondi Beach, an attack local authorities are describing as a terrorist attack.
As of the newest reports, officials have stated the number of fatalities remains at 16, encompassing one of the alleged gunmen. Furthermore, 42 people with injuries were transported to hospital.
Those who died are yet to be publicly named, but authorities state their ages span from 10 and 87 years of age.
Here are the individuals who have been identified so far.
Eli Schlanger
Originally from London clergyman Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first to be publicly identified.
Reportedly a father of five children, he was the associate rabbi at Chabad of Bondi. Relatives and friends spoke of him as “vivacious, energetic, full of life and a very warm outgoing person who was dedicated to assisting others”.
“How is it possible that a joyful rabbi who went to a beach to spread happiness and light, to make the world a better place, meet his end in this way?” a relative asked.
Schlanger and his wife celebrated the birth of their newest son just a few months ago.
Alexander Kleytman
Alexander Kleytman also lost his life, as stated by his wife.
She described the events leading up to the attack, explaining they were standing when the gunfire began. “He pushed his body up because he wished to be near me,” she stated.
The pair were both Holocaust survivors, having faced immense hardship in their childhood. They had subsequently relocated to Australia from Ukraine.
Dan Elkayam
French foreign ministry have announced that French man Dan Elkayam is a casualty.
In a statement, the Foreign Minister expressed that France shared the grief of his family, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.
“This despicable act is a fresh and tragic example of a revolting outpouring of antisemitic hatred that we must eradicate,” the message continued.
One Child
A young girl, aged 10 who was rushed to the Sydney Children’s Hospital is among those who had died, police have confirmed.
One Israeli Citizen
A national of Israel was a fatality during the attack, according to multiple sources citing the Israeli government.
Those Injured
Of the 42 people transported to hospitals, many are still receiving treatment, with five in serious condition. The injured comprise two police officers who attended the scene.
A casualty is a bystander who rushed to the scene to confront one of the attackers. Called a hero, he received gunshot wounds but is in stable condition in hospital.
Arsen Ostrovsky
One of those wounded is Arsen Ostrovsky, a community leader. Sources state he was hurt and underwent treatment in hospital.
In a message, he described the incident as an “horrific scene,” but also noted the response of those who rushed to help. He stated he felt it was a “miracle” he was alive.
Evan Zlatkis
Evan Zlatkis, a media director, was also injured in the attack. He described he listened to “a large number” of shots.
“Initially, I believed it was rubber bullets, but it’s gone into my own skin and into my leg,” he explained. “I was hit. I received first aid. I’m ok.”
