Beyond honoring video games in multiple award categories, The Game Awards formerly highlighted a Future Class initiative. People recognized as part of the Future Class were meant to represent the “promising, courageous, and diverse future” of gaming, akin to how certain annual lists spotlight prominent figures. But, the Future Class program is going away, as confirmed by event organizers.
Beyond Simply Honor: The Purpose of Future Class
Future Class was not just a nod to prominent individuals in the video game community. It also served as a center for networking and career advancement. Although certain past members expressed appreciation for participating in Future Class, some expressed that the program did not do enough for those involved. Complaints targeted various areas of Future Class, ranging from the lack of assistance to attend the ceremony to providing no compensation for guiding recent participants.
Past Controversy and Initiative Hiatus
Future Class seemed to be put on hold in 2024, when The Game Awards omitted the recognition during the event. This absence came after a previous year dispute where some those in the program endorsed a letter urging the show to employ its stage to express solidarity with an international issue.
"We were given the role of representatives of a brighter tomorrow — therefore, our obligation towards you and all the players globally compels us to speak up," the letter stated.
It additionally claimed that the gaming industry frequently marginalized specific communities, and urged professionals in the industry to improve.
Official Announcement and Website Updates
Although this is the second year that TGA has not selected a Future Class, event organizers had not formally declared its cancellation until now. The omission has been remarked upon, in part, due to the seeming erasure of all references of the program on the the event’s online portal. The show creator and producer has not yet replied to a request for a statement.
Next year’s Game Awards are planned for the 11th of December.
