Southern California Battles Record-Breaking Heat Just One Week After Severe Winter Weather.
After enduring significant rainfall that resulted in floodwaters across parts of the city, LA is now seeing abnormally warm temperatures for late February.
All-Time High Readings
During the day Friday, the temperature reached 33 degrees Celsius (91 Fahrenheit) in central LA, as reported by the National Weather Service. This easily surpasses the prior high for February 27th, which was eighty-eight degrees Fahrenheit and was established in the previous year.
"Very warm conditions" were labeled on NWS charts for the region.
Public Health Advisories
Authorities issued a warning that Friday's heat posed an "increased danger for heat illness" for those at risk. Their guidance featured:
- Keeping well-hydrated.
- Avoiding outdoor activities during the peak heat of the day.
- Not leaving children or pets unattended in a hot car.
A Dramatic Reversal
This dramatic increase in heat comes on the heels of a massive storm system that struck the region recently. That storm unleashed heavy snow, strong winds, and thunderstorms to the mountains, leading to evacuation orders for countless residents.
Tragically, the severe weather also caused a deadly avalanche in the Tahoe area, which left nine people dead from.
Weekend Outlook
Looking ahead cooler conditions will arrive. Temperatures were expected to fall to around 16 degrees Celsius (61 Fahrenheit) in the city by overnight.
Additional areas that reached ninety degrees featured Burbank, Woodland Hills, and Long Beach. Meanwhile, Oxnard, Westwood, Camarillo, and Santa Maria were expected to experience the upper eighties.
For the weekend, downtown LA can see weather in the eighties, with cooler weather expected for the week ahead.
