The English seamer added to the injury concerns plaguing England upon exiting the ground on the second morning of the Boxing Day Test versus the Australians.
The right-arm seamer pulled up with his left hamstring after the final ball that he bowled at the MCG.
Team management reported Atkinson felt some "soreness" and would spend time away from the action to undergo evaluation "during the day".
The final Test in this Ashes battle at the SCG begins on Sunday, 4 January.
The visitors have previously lost key quicks one seamer due to knee trouble and Jofra Archer with an abdominal strain on this Ashes tour.
Matthew Fisher was brought into the squad to provide backup.
Atkinson struggled early in the series, managing only a handful of scalps.
He was dropped for the Adelaide match, only to be brought back for the fourth Test as Archer's replacement.
The county bowler performed better in the fourth Test, claiming a couple of wickets with the ball, and scoring 28 runs with the bat being one of only three English batsmen who passed ten runs.
Following a brief spell in Australia's second innings, he came back the next day and removed Scott Boland Scott Boland caught behind.
However, on the final ball of his spell, he delivered a slower ball to Travis Head and suddenly grabbed his left hamstring.
The English bowler was recalled for the Boxing Day Test after being left out the Adelaide game.
