A tragic train crash in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel opposition criticisms regarding the speed and management of the country's flagship government projects.
The crash happened on the Interoceanic Train, a route constructed to connect the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was created to offer an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving economic development in the area.
“We are going to thoroughly investigate what caused this tragedy,” affirmed the country's president.
The president reported that, of the around 250 passengers on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in serious condition. The official added plans to travel to Oaxaca to speak with those involved.
Key Undertaking of Past Leadership
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone infrastructure project of the immediate past president, whose time in office concluded the year before. This project was a hallmark of his government's strategic vision for the southern region.
Another multi-billion dollar railway undertaking from that time, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the comprehensive effort to stimulate the economic fortunes of a relatively less developed part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Worries
The building of both railway systems was supervised by the nation's military, marking a dramatic growth of its duties in civilian works. They were executed at an rapid speed, defying expectations to be at least partly inaugurated before the end of that presidency.
However, this fast-paced schedule had also raised persistent concerns over safety standards.
- Sunday's accident was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This encompasses an prior accident this month when a train hit a truck at a crossing.
- The other major rail project has also experienced a couple of non-lethal derailments.
Appeals for Investigation and Halt
In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the head of a key rival party called for an immediate suspension in the construction and operation of all such projects.
This stoppage was proposed pending a full safety audit. The party stated that the tragedy "requires swift accountability."
In reply, the national leader insisted that the train had been running in complete adherence to all security protocols. Commitments were given that the government would continue to be "responsible" in both the development and running of these vital projects.
