New York Jets Coach Aaron Glenn Optimistic Kris Boyd Will Recover Fully After NYC Shooting

Jets head coach Aaron Glenn has stated that he recently spoke with cornerback Kris Boyd and is confident the athlete will recover well after suffering a gunshot wound in central New York in the early hours of Sunday.

Glenn described that Boyd, currently in the hospital, was “positive” during their latest talk.

“What reassures me, is that he’s feeling positive,” Glenn stated on Wednesday. “His wife and child, they’re in good spirits and he is expected to recover fully.”

Glenn was unsure when Boyd would leave the medical facility, where he has been listed as critical but stable.

“Don’t know just yet,” the coach said. “However, I can share, just talking to him, his attitude was encouraging. And again, that reassures me, because of his outlook and he’s talking that way.”

NYPD issued video stills Monday of an individual wanted in the attack on the player. The reason behind the incident remains under investigation and officials stated it is unknown if Boyd was singled out. No one else was hurt were reported.

The incident occurred just after 2am on Sunday morning in the area between the famous arena and the iconic square. Boyd, in his late twenties, was transported to a local hospital after being shot in the abdomen, police said. The shooter fled the scene.

Glenn said Boyd has occupied his thinking “a great deal” since he heard about the shooting. Glenn added that Boyd and his spouse just had a child.

“What immediately crossed my mind, he has a new baby,” Glenn remarked. “My mind went to his family, I’m thinking about his kid and I hope he recovers fully. Those thoughts dominated my thinking.
“A certain process is underway, that I won’t detail, but It is reassuring that his outcome looks very positive.”

Boyd did not participate in the present campaign, his debut year with New York, after his season was cut short due to injury on 18 August with a shoulder injury that involved surgical repair.

Boyd came to New York as an unrestricted free agent in March and was expected to be a significant contributor of the team’s updated special teams under the coach and special teams coordinator the special teams coach. Unfortunately, he sustained an injury during preseason drills on early August and had to be helped off.

Boyd has remained around the team during the entire campaign while working his way back.

“He’s been a part of what we’re doing,” Glenn said. “I mean, he is a regular at our matches. His commitment is total. To be one of the top special teams players in this league, he has been instrumental in guiding others.”

Boyd, hailing from the Lone Star State, played his first four seasons with Minnesota after being a seventh-round pick by Minnesota out of Texas University in the 2019 draft. He joined the Arizona Cardinals in 2023 and then joined Houston’s practice squad after that. Boyd inked a single-season agreement for $1.6 million with New York in March.
