New Year Celebrants Told to Dress Warmly with Snow Forecast Across the UK
Weather experts are reporting a chilly beginning to the new year, with snowfall likely throughout a lot of the UK. Celebrants are advised to dress warmly as near-freezing temperatures are expected for New Year's Eve.
Festive Celebrations Proceed Despite Warnings
The Scottish capital's iconic Hogmanay events are planned to proceed, a contrast to last year's calling-off. This proceeds amid weather alerts for snow in northern Scotland.
"A cold New Year's Eve evening for those partying, so additional clothing will be needed," noted the national forecaster.
Celebrations Under Mostly Clear but Cold Skies
Elsewhere in the UK, the weather is expected to be ideal for fireworks displays, with no rain and clear skies. Readings are expected to be cold, meaning warm wraps essential, according to forecasters.
In more northern areas, conditions will be cloudier, but this is not expected to affect visibility for watching fireworks. "We are not looking at low cloud, mist or murk, so you will likely be able to see fireworks, just not stars," commented one forecaster.
Extensive Advisories for New Year's Day
Heading into Friday, weather warnings have been issued across Northern Ireland and stretching from Wales, across parts of the north-west, the West Midlands and all the way to London and the majority of the south-east of England.

- People are advised to allow extra time for journeys on the road.
- Disruptions and cancellations are likely on public transport.
Readings Expected to Fall Further
With the start of 2026, it will be "frosty everywhere where you are," stated forecaster Simon Partridge. Temperatures are expected to plummet as snowfall and high winds are predicted to hit the north of the country.
Approximately 10cm of snow is expected to have built up in some areas by Friday morning, reaching up to 30cm on the highest roads and hills.
Health Advisories Issued
Meanwhile, amber-level health advisories have been issued for the north-east and north-west of England. These are expected to continue until noon on 5 January, with the mercury expected to fall to between 3C and 5C.
Authorities explained this indicated the weather was likely to trigger major effects across health and social care services. This encompasses a likely increase in the number of deaths among vulnerable individuals or those aged 65 or over.
The advice for all is clear: to celebrate the new year in security, dressing for the cold is absolutely essential.
