Jailhouse Surprise: Brazil's FormerPresident Jair Bolsonaro Confronts Time Behind Bars
He fought the law and the legal system triumphed.
Two months after receiving a quarter-century plus sentence for attempting to “destroy” the nation's democracy, one-time leader Jair Bolsonaro at last looks jail-bound.
Anticipated Jailing
The adjudicated instigator – who had been living under home confinement in his residence while a series of court processes and challenges proceed – is broadly anticipated to be incarcerated in the near future, amid growing speculation that he will be moved to a well-known top-security facility.
Previous Remarks on Inmates
Over Bolsonaro’s long public life, the far-right ex- soldier exhibited scant mercy for the country's inmates.
“For what reason must we provide these lowlifes a good life?” he once pondered. “They deserve to be screwed, end of story. That's my opinion.”
On another occasion, Bolsonaro proclaimed: “Unless you desire to finish in prison, you simply need is not sexual assault, kidnap or theft.”
Jail Destination Discussion
Yet the idea of Bolsonaro himself landing in the Papuda top-security prison in Brasília has appalled allies, several of whom this week inspected the prison in an obvious attempt to discourage the supreme court from banishing him there.
The senator, a politician from Bolsonaro’s allied group who was one of the visitors, stated he expected the elderly figure to be incarcerated in the next 10 days and was concerned his destination could be Papuda.
Lucas claimed Bolsonaro’s severe digestive ailments – the consequence of a almost deadly assault during the last political campaign – meant it would be risky to keep the one-time head of state there. “His [health] situation is highly critical. He cannot to handle it if they take him to Papuda … It will be awful,” said the senator, who also expressed concern about packed cells and the standard of prison meals.
When inspecting Papuda, Lucas remembered seeing cells holding four dozen detainees: “That is almost one square metre per inmate.
“We talked to the prisoners and they protest, of course, of the terrible cuisine,” added the senator.
Backers React
Lucas is not the lone figure voicing opinions prior to the one-time head of state's expected imprisonment.
Authoring in a major newspaper, one more backer, the ex- communications minister Fábio Wajngarten, deplored the “brutal” conclusion to Bolsonaro’s “flawless” public service and claimed Brazil was about to witness “the greatest unfairness in its history”.
“This is an unfairness that erodes the spirits of millions people in Brazil,” he stated.
Varied Popular Reaction
This could be true given the significant backing Bolsonaro maintains on the conservative side. But his anticipated imprisonment has also warmed the hearts of millions individuals who believe he deserves to be jailed for plotting to prevent his successor from becoming president – and additionally scheming to have him assassinated.
Congressman Otoni, a representative for the current president's political party, commented: “Not a soul wishes Bolsonaro to be sent in a dark cell. No one wants Bolsonaro to be sent in solitary confinement. No one wishes Bolsonaro to go hungry or for him to have to sleep on the floor. We desire him to obtain proper care – but dignified care behind bars. He must not carry on being his personal jailer for his entire life.”
He observed how Bolsonaro backers, who have for a long time applauding the severe handling of prisoners, had abruptly become aware to their rights. “Recently has the extreme right – which has consistently asserted that human rights were not for offenders – chosen to visit a prison to learn what circumstances are truly like,” he remarked.
“Bolsonaro is a offender,” Otoni insisted, but that did not mean he deserved “degrading, insulting handling”.
Possible Incarceration Environment
Despite rumors that Bolsonaro could be moved to Papuda, which presently contains about thousands of detainees, his expected assigned facility seems to be a close prison for law enforcement and other “particular” detainees called Papudinha (Minor Papuda).
Its cells are far more adequate than those in the primary facility, although still a far cry from the comfort Bolsonaro enjoyed while occupying the spectacular presidential palace, approximately a short distance away.
As per reports, the room Bolsonaro could expect to occupy in Papudinha has about 24 sq metres – roughly the dimensions of a couple of car spots – and contains a 12 square meter WC with a bathing area and a 12 sq metre terrace. “The ex-president might be authorized to have a set and even a cooler in his cell as long as they were donated by his relatives,” the report suggested.
Ideological Responses
Senator Lucas denounced the talked-about plan to send the one-time head of state to Papuda as “an act of revenge” on the part of the judicial authority who led Bolsonaro’s proceedings and will decide his fate in the {
