Israelis observe two-year remembrance of October 7th incident as Gaza peace negotiations proceed
People have come together across the country to commemorate two years since the Hamas-initiated attack on October 7th, 2023, as discussions continued in the neighboring country over an end to the hostilities in the Gaza Strip.
The incident led to more than 1,200 people killed and 251 others abducted back to Gaza as prisoners. It was the uniquely most fatal day for Jews since the Second World War.
Israel answered by beginning a military offensive in Gaza which has claimed in excess of 67,000 people, as reported by the area's Hamas-administered health ministry. Its numbers are considered accurate by the UN and other international bodies.
"Our violent enemies have hit us hard, but they have not broken us," Benjamin Netanyahu remarked on that day.
He also promised to "accomplish all the objectives of the war: the release of all the captured, the removal of the Hamas regime and the assurance that Gaza will never again present a threat to Israel".
Commemorative Events Across Israel
The government authorities postponed official remembrance events until mid-October - after the conclusion of the Jewish High Holiday season - but events still were held around the country on that day.
A commemorative event for the loved ones of Israeli citizens who died in the Hamas incident was held in Tel Aviv. Organized by the affected families, it was broadcast on Israeli television channels.
A period earlier, a silent tribute was held throughout the country.
Peace Discussions in Egypt
At the same time, the conflicting parties' representatives met in the North African tourist destination of the Egyptian city for a follow-up session of indirect talks to examine the terms of the agreement.
A prominent representative involved in the negotiations revealed that an night meeting of indirect talks began at 7 PM local time.
The representative stated the day's discussions finished without concrete outcomes, due to conflicting views over the suggested Israeli withdrawal maps from Gaza and over guarantees Hamas demands to make certain Israel does not resume hostilities after the initial stage of the deal.
He commented that the talks are "tough and have not yet produce any real breakthrough," but pointed out that mediators are making efforts to close the disparities between the conflicting groups.
Critical Issues in Talks
- An enduring ceasefire
- The trade of the prisoners still detained by Hamas for inmates from Gaza
- The pullout of troops from Gaza
- Arrangements for relief supplies provision
- Future management of the territory
Citizen Feeling
In the city's Hostages Square previously, 29-year-old Hagar - whose brother survived the incident on the gathering, where many attendees were killed and dozens more were captured by Hamas gunmen - explained: "No place seems like home any longer and until every captive return not a single person will be secure."
"When we see everybody home again, we can breathe anew. Then we can begin to recover," she concluded.
In front of the prime minister's residence in Jerusalem, people congregated to demonstrate their solidarity for the relatives of the captives. Israel says forty-eight stay in captivity in Gaza, approximately twenty of whom are believed to be surviving.
Protester Atalia Regev explained: "We need do whatever arrangement necessary for the abducted to return. But we really want promises that we will be safe."
Research now consistently show that about the majority of Israelis prefer the war to end in return for the release of the abducted.
Gaza Conditions
At the location of the music event, mourners gathered to remember the victims.
From there, the noise of Israeli air strikes and shelling could be heard just a short distance away in Gaza, where witnesses reported the severe Israeli shelling carried on.
In the main city, air and artillery strikes were documented in the morning of that day in the west side Tal al-Hawa, area and locality areas and in the east side area of the community, as well Shati refugee camp to the north-west.
"When the night comes, the dread appears with it," relocated Gaza City resident a local woman, whose young son was killed by an Israeli aerial attack previously, explained.
"We are afraid of the attacks. All the night we are sleeping together, embracing, notably my smallest child who puts his head on me the entire evening."
"Constantly we look at the reports to see what happened. And I'm concerned that this ceasefire will not be completed and that the conflict will resume to us."
Humanitarian Situation
The medical facility in the urban area said it had accepted the bodies of several people by the daytime, including several who died in an Israeli attack in the south part al-Sabra neighbourhood.
A different healthcare center in the south region of that area said another two victims had been delivered. An individual was died by Israeli soldiers while attempting to get assistance to the south region, health workers said.
The region's health ministry reported twenty-five of the {territ
