The European Union might “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it calls “unjustified” visa bans imposed by the US on five Europeans involved in combating online hate and disinformation, an EU official has said.
European Leaders Decry US Move as ‘Coercion’
European leaders including Emmanuel Macron accused Washington of “bullying and threats”, following the visa restrictions were placed on individuals who have been central to campaigns to introduce legislation governing US-based technology firms.
“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to coerce American platforms to suppress US perspectives they oppose,” wrote a senior US official online. “This government will not stand for such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”
Widespread Condemnation Across Europe
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined France in condemning the decision.
The bans were imposed this week on a former EU commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with several anti-disinformation campaigners, from two in Germany and two in the UK.
A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance
The DSA is seen by Washington as a type of speech restriction, whereas EU authorities contend the rules are necessary to control inflammatory language and falsehoods.
This disagreement threatens to become a facet of a much broader existing political and ideological clash involving the current US administration and Europe.
