Cancellieri Shows Flashing Moments of Exceptional Talent in Positive Aspect for Struggling Lazio

The atmosphere at Lazio's home ground was decidedly gloomy this past Saturday. The Biancocelesti found themselves behind against Torino, a team that had let in 10 goals while scoring only two in their most recent five league matches. Ultras from the Curva Nord were wrapping up their ongoing dissent in an ongoing feud with club owner Claudio Lotito.

A Season Falling Apart?

Was Lazio's season falling apart, or did there exist any cohesion holding it together from the beginning? They reappointed Maurizio Sarri as manager in the summer transfer window, only for him publicly stated that the club had omitted to inform him about the transfer ban they were about to receive for financial irregularities. Reports that his departure was imminent were not true, but he acknowledged that Lotito had "misled" him.

The Biancocelesti became as messy in their performances as behind the scenes, beating Verona 4-0 and Genoa 3-0 but being defeated in their other initial five matches, featuring the derby della Capitale. From one game to the next, it's been difficult to ascertain if progress is being made or collapsing.

Matteo's Unforeseen Presence

A single player continued to smile throughout. Matteo Cancellieri wasn't originally meant to feature for Lazio during this campaign. He completed the last one at Parma as a loanee and, early this summer, Lazio were attempting to remain there a while longer. The signing restriction forced a rethink. Lazio could not afford to reduce their roster lacking backup options.

Cancellieri arrived initially during Sarri's previous tenure, then a 20-year-old alumnus of Verona's academy. He made 20 matches in the league with the club in 2022-23, the vast majority of those from the bench. Their former sporting director, Igli Tare, who departed following that term, subsequently claimed Sarri of "telling everyone Cancellieri had superstar potential then never playing him."

Uncovering His Best Role

It's possible the coach was continuing to attempt to determine the specific characteristics of the player's talent. Originally described as a flank player on arrival, Cancellieri yet was deployed for much of that season as an unconvincing alternative to Ciro Immobile as center forward. During 63 outings on loan at Empoli and Parma over the last two seasons, he scored seven times. Shoehorn
