British Designer Antony Price, Renowned for Styling Iconic Acts Like Bowie and Duran Duran, Passes Away at Age 80.
Antony Price, the visionary UK-based designer behind some of the most iconic looks favored by artists from David Bowie to Roxy Music and even royalty like Queen Camilla, has sadly died aged 80.
Price was best known for his defined forms and theatrical styles, most notably the soft-colored suits that appeared in the iconic band Duran Duran's landmark music video for "their hit Rio".
"They honored him as a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the band released a statement on social media."
Price's death comes less than a month after he unveiled his newest line in London, marking his return to the runway after over three decades. The performer Lily Allen showcased a dress evoking the famous black velvet "revenge dress" made famous by Diana, Princess of Wales.
A Pioneering Career
Hailing from Yorkshire, where he was born in 1945, Price headed for London at the start of the 1960s to study at the renowned Royal College of Art.
Shortly after his graduation, he commenced his career designing men's fashion at Stirling Copper and was the creator of the tight, button-detailed trousers that Sir Mick Jagger wore during the band's Gimme Shelter tour in 1969.
He launched his own brand in 1979 and presented his inaugural collection a year later. The show opened with creations worn by model Jerry Hall, who was also seen in the bridal gown Price designed for her for her marriage to Sir Mick Jagger.
Collaborations with Icons
A long-time collaborator of musical chameleon David Bowie, Price designed the memorable jacket the artist wore for his "the song As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.
His trademark skill to fuse elements of men's and women's fashion along with his expert craftsmanship in crafting form-fitting garments made him a "true original," in the words of the UK's fashion authority.
In the 1990s, he started creating outfits for Camilla, now Queen Consort, including several ensembles for her tour of the United States after becoming Duchess.
Following a profession lasting over fifty years, Price held his ultimate fashion presentation in London last month in conjunction with the fashion brand 16Arlington.
