Barcelona Coach Hansi Flick Vows to Alter Behavior for Grandchildren

Hansi Flick

Hansi Flick won the European Cup with Bayern Munich in the year 2020.

Barca head coach Hansi Flick admits he does not want his grandchildren witnessing the actions that led to his red card during the fixture against Girona.

Flick was shown a yellow card for mocking applause the match official when he indicated four minutes of injury time, following the team's wasted opportunities with the score level.

When substitute Ronald Araujo netted a late winner for the club, Flick joined the home crowd in joyous scenes and was given a second yellow for making an inappropriate signal.

"I dislike my image in such a condition on TV, and I hope to prevent my grandchildren from seeing their elder like that," Flick said. "So I probably have to adjust my conduct."

Flick Attributes Passion to Devotion for the Club

Speaking at a news conference before Barcelona face Olympiacos in the European competition, Flick linked the gesture for which he was penalised to the depth of feeling he has for the team, which he has managed since this year.

Flick was manager at Bayern Munich when the German side were the first to score eight goals against Barcelona in more than 50 years in that year, and claims to have been understated on the sideline as his team advanced into a Champions League semi-final.

"I remember when I was coach of Bayern, the footage of the game against Barca showed that I had the identical response to the initial, second and eighth goals," commented Flick. "People remarked I never smiled! Right now I'm expressing more emotion, it's true, because this club has completely changed me."

"Maybe I should restrain my emotions, but I love Barcelona, the city and its people, and that's why I consistently give my all."

Touchline Ban for El Clasico

The manager's dismissal includes a touchline ban which will confine him to the seating area of the Bernabeu as his team play the rivals in the derby on this weekend – though Barcelona are appealing against the ruling.

Barca leader the president alleged a "hidden influence" was behind referee the referee's decisions against Girona – implying support for the Madrid club – though the coach himself declined to get involved in suggestions of officiating bias.

"I held no issue with the referee," he said. "I did not protest at him but he interpreted it that way and that's something I have to accept."
