Recreational competitors will have the possibility to earn A$1m when they compete against elite players - headed by world number one the Spanish champion - in a one-point battle before the year's first major

Tournament officials of the Australian Open have announced the $1 Million Single-Point Tournament, which will pair a dozen non-professionals against 22 professionals in a single-elimination format at the tournament grounds

This Innovative Tournament Functions

Players will play 'the classic hand game' to determine who gets to serve or return, and whoever wins the point will advance to the subsequent phase

The winner of the event will receive a significant cash prize

By comparison, players who reached the final four of the main draw competitions in the 2025 Australian Open won A$1.1m

Previous Related Competitions

The New York major organized a redesigned, separate combined gender tournament in the eighth month which encouraged top singles players to participate, with the victors receiving one million US dollars

The Melbourne tournament held its debut quick-fire event earlier this year, but the prize fund was A$60,000 and it had limited exposure

One top competitor was the single high-ranked athlete participating, and his campaign finished when he put the sole serving chance permitted into the net in his penultimate round

Officials have not specified precisely how the event will function, but it is projected to emulate a comparable structure to this year's edition

The top competitors will be granted to have a single serve and the everyday players on two occasions - as is the standard practice in conventional tennis

While it is not certain how the pairings will work, there will be five knockout rounds and the site will be the main stadium rather than the secondary venue

The last matches will be held in a nighttime schedule instead of 1pm local time

Entry Requirements

Local players - or overseas competitors who have enrolled with Tennis Australia - can enter 'One Point Slam' tournaments at their local tennis clubs

The champions of the grassroots tournaments will then go into a random pairing, with a single non-professional from every geographic division chosen to participate in the 'championship round' in a night session on the specified date

There will also be a qualifying draw in the final month which non-professionals, aspiring competitors, well-known figures and sport stars can enter

It commences on the starting date and the two winners will advance to the following day's 'grand finale' with the other eight amateurs and 10 professionals

"Regardless of your skill level, the ultimate winner will claim the award. Entries will begin shortly at clubs throughout the nation"

Competition planners stated there were "more big names to be unveiled imminently", while the tournament site indicated "famous personalities" would be participating
