Previous national team leader Lewis Moody has been supported to tackle motor neurone disease with "complete determination" by past playing partner and co-World Cup champion Will Greenwood.

Lewis Moody, aged 47, discovered he was diagnosed with the debilitating illness a fortnight back and has shared with a national television show that he is having trouble processing the ramifications of his diagnosis.

Rugby league legend Rob Burrow and international rugby hero Doddie Weir have both died from the disease in recent years.

"He's an incredible person that we cherish deeply," Will Greenwood, who teamed up with Moody for England and his club, stated during BBC Radio 5 Live.

"The news is heartbreaking, because he is a truly good person. And I know there is no pattern to such things - the way people depart - but you support the worthy individuals."

"He's completely without ill-will, he is the most optimistic human you can possibly encounter... and then he had a capability in matches to completely change and be a remarkably determined player."

"He will fight this with all his energy."

Andrea Pinchen, Sweeney's counterpart at Leicester where Moody made 223 appearances, earning numerous national trophies and two European crowns over 14 years, also paid tribute to Moody as someone beyond just sports.

"The figures, trophies and awards demonstrate the exceptional athlete Lewis was, but that is just part of the picture," stated the official.

"One minute he's parading around with the global championship cup and the following Friday he'd be in the ticket office where I worked, responding to enthusiast inquiries if we were particularly swamped and assisting with sales."

"Personally, his loyalty to the organization along with his kindness and enthusiasm shone through, which made him beloved among team-mates, staff and supporters alike."

"Always looking to help others, Lewis in partnership with his wife Annie have labored diligently through the their foundation, backing investigations of cerebral growths and assisting impacted households."

"He completely immersed himself. It was clearly shown by personal conduct. He would avoid requiring others to do something he personally wouldn't attempt. He is completely courageous."
